Russia Today: On air resignation 'self-promotional stunt'

The state-funded news network Russia Today inferred the most recent on air resignation by a news anchor was "nothing more than a self-promotional stunt".

After Washington-based Liz Wahl announced to viewers she was handing in her resignation as the network "whitewashes the actions of Putin," Russia Today released a statement:

When a journalist disagrees with the editorial position of his or her organisation, the usual course of action is to address those grievances with the editor, and, if they cannot be resolved, to quit like a professional.

But when someone makes a big public show of a personal decision, it is nothing more than a self-promotional stunt.

We wish Liz the best of luck on her chosen path.

Russia Today anchor resigns on air over Ukraine

A news anchor at the state-funded news channel Russia Today has announced her resignation live on air over the situation in Ukraine.

Liz Wahl, who describes herself as Filipina-Hungarian-American, said she decided to leave her role as Russia Today "whitewashes the actions of Putin".

"As a reporter on this network I face many ethical and moral challenges," Ms Wahl said. "My partner is a physician at a military base where he sees every day the first hand accounts of the ultimate prices that people pay for this country."

"I'm proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth, and that is why, after this newscast, I am resigning".

Russian anchor speaks out against crisis in Ukraine

A news anchor for Moscow's English speaking news network Russia Today (RT) has used the last minutes of her show to speak out against Russia's actions regarding Ukraine.

Abby Martin called the crisis a "terrible situation" on the Kremlin funded news network.

The anchor, who is originally from Washington D.C told viewers she "will not sit here and apologise or defend military aggression."

"Just because I work here, for RT, doesn't mean I don't have editorial independence. I will not sit here and apologise or defend military aggression." she said.

Russia Today responded by saying "Contrary to the popular opinion, RT doesn’t beat its journalists into submission, and they are free to express their own opinions, not just in private but on the air. This is the case with Abby’s commentary on the Ukraine.

"In her comment Ms Martin also noted that she does not possess a deep knowledge of reality of the situation in Crimea. As such we’ll be sending her to Crimea to give her an opportunity to make up her own mind from the epicentre of the story."
